Good Practices for Microchipping Dogs and Cats

Implantation of microchips is a veterinary procedure that should be performed by a licensed veterinarian or under supervision of a licensed veterinarian.

Sites in animals where microchips are to be implanted must be standardized. For domestic dogs and cats, the recommended site for subcutaneous injection of a transponder is on the dorsal midline, just cranial to the shoulder blade or scapula.

1
Have a microchip reader and the sterile pack containing the microchip and syringe.
2
Scan the pet with the reader, to verify whether or not the animal has a microchip that has been previously implanted.
3
Read the microchip in the carton to verify its operation and the number that corresponds to the number printed on the accompanying bar code labels.
4
Sterilize the application site.
5
Open the carton and remove the syringe. Remove the needle cap.
6
Fold and pull the animal's skin at the implant site and inject the microchip by inserting the full length of the needle with the bevel face up.
7
Press the plunger of the syringe. You will feel a click.
8
Carefully remove the needle from the animal's skin.
9
Replace the cap on the needle, remove the needle from the syringe and discard the syringe and needle properly.
10
Massage the application site lightly with your fingers.
11
Scan the application site with the reader to check the operation of the microchip.
12
Register the animal in the AnimallTAG Net according to the instructions on the back of the Microchip Certificate.
